PLACES The
conference room and the bedrooms will be inside the
Patriarchal Seminary (Seminario Patriarcale di Venezia).
The Patriarchal Seminary's address is DORSODURO 1
30123 VENEZIA It was built in 1669 on a project
of Baldassare Longhena and located in a unique spot of
Venice at the entrance of the Grand Canal, facing it
on the north side, the Basin of San Marco on the east,
the Canale della Giudecca on the south, and the
Basilica of S. Maria della Salute on the west: among
the remarkable buildings one can see from the
Seminary's windows, one should mention the Doge's
Palace, Jacopo Sansovino's Libreria Marciana and Ca'
Corner, Andrea Palladio's Churches of S. Giorgio and
Redentore and Longhena's Basilica of S. Maria della
Salute. From there you just have to cross the
Grand Canal (with the water-bus or a gondola) to get
to St. Mark square and the core of Venice.
In the last years all bedrooms rooms and conference rooms have been completely renewed, and now all bedrooms have en suite facilities. Inside the Seminary there is an important collection of paintings and sculptures (Pinacoteca Manfrediana) including paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, Tiziano Vecellio (Titian), Filippo Lippi, Cima da Conegliano, and sculptures by Antonio Canova and Alessandro Vittoria. If you prefer contemporary art, no twenty meters left from the entrance of the Seminary you may visit the Pinault Museum of Contemporary Art at the Punta della Dogana (the inside recently restored on a project of Tadao Ando) or, in five minute's walk, get to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection to admire Picasso, Magritte, Max Ernst, Pollock, Tancredi, Klee, De Chirico, Severini, Giacometti, Brancusi and many others. Another five minutes walk and you get to the Gallerie dell'Accademia, where ''the flower of Venetian painting is assembled'': Bellini, Giorgione, Carpaccio, Mantegna, Piero della Francesca, Lorenzo Lotto, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Paolo Veronese's Banquet in Levi's House, Titian's Presentation of the Virgin at the Temple, and much more. Close to the Accademia, you may wish to end a hard day's work tasting a glass of wine and a ''cicchetto'' (snack) at the Cantinone (già Schiavi), where Venetians and Anglo-Saxon immigrants gather in the late afternoons. Note that accommodation in the Seminary is not available to anybody, but only for the Seminary's theology students, priests, and the participants (and accompanying persons) of the Summer School. |
