PROGRAMME
The following is
a preliminary programme and may be subject to changes. More detailed information
will be given.
The themes of the lectures
will be:
Michael Aschbacher:
TheSubgroup
Structure of Finite Alternating and Symmetric Groups
Prerequisites:
1. Basic finite
group theory, such as in Chapters 1-6 and Chapter 8 of my
text Finite Group
Theory (FGT). The material on permutation groups in
section 15 is particularly
relevant, as are some of the exercises in
Chapter 5.
2. Knowledge of
the generalized Fitting subgroup, such as in section 31
of FGT.
3. Some (but not
too much is necessary) knowledge of the finite simple
groups. For example
some of the less technical material in Chapter 7 of
FGT on the finite
classical groups, and some introduction to the finite
groups of Lie type,
such as in section 47 of FGT, or in Carter, Simple
Groups of Lie type.
