Summary. For hyperelastic bodies, both compressible and incompressible, some necessary conditions for an energy minimizer are reviewed. Then, sufficient conditions for a local minimizer are given. For a body subject to displacements at the boundary prescribed in shape and of growing intensity, the sufficient conditions provide a lower bound for the critical value of the intensity at which loss of stability occurs.
