Location

UPDATE: The TYPES 2007 Conference takes place at the former Church of Santa Maria dei Battuti, Via Borgo di Ponte, Cividale del Friuli (Udine). The venue is marked as "1" in this marked map. Farthest hotels (Locanda al Castello and Hotel Cristallo) will be connected by a shuttle bus.

Cividale del Friuli is a small medieval town in the foothills of the eastern Alps, near Udine. Cividale, founded according to tradition in 50 B.C. by Julius Caesar as Forum Julii (the forum of Julius), is acknowledged to be the historical and cultural capital of Friuli. The area, called "Colli orientali", is well renown for its wines.

Wireless internet access will be provided at the former "Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle", via Monastero Maggiore 38 (on the other side of the river).

Travel information

Cividale is located in Friuli Venezia Giulia, North-East of Italy, 20 kilometers from Udine, 75 kilometers from Trieste, close to the Slovenian border. Look at this map from Google for directions.

Traveling by train: Cividale is connected with Udine by frequent trains; the trip takes 15 minutes. See the train timetable. Tickets can be bought at the newspaper shop in the Udine train station. For reaching Udine, please look at the official Trenitalia timetable, or at the Die Bahn timetable. (Notice that the Udine-Cividale connection is run by a private company, and its timetable may be not present in some databases.)

Traveling by air: The nearest airport is Friuli-Venezia Giulia Airport (aka "Trieste airport", IATA code "TRS"), located about 40 kilometers from Udine and Cividale. There are daily connections with Rome, Milan, Turin, Munich, Frankfurt Hahn, London Stansted.
A bus shuttle service ("line 51") from the airport to Udine is available; the trip takes about 40 minutes (see the second page of the timetable). Bus tickets can be bought from a vending machine, in the arrivals hall (fare "E07", 3.55 euro), or directly on the bus. From Udine, proceed to Cividale by train (see above); the train station is close to the bus terminal.
It is possible to reach Cividale from the airport by bus, with some connections; see the official APT website for an interactive timetable.

Alternatively there is Venice "Marco Polo" Airport, located 110 kilometers from Udine. A bus shuttle runs from Venice Airport to the Venice-Mestre railway station (see the timetable); then, there are several trains to Udine (see above).

Traveling by taxi: Taxis can be found at the airport and in front of the Udine bus station and train station. A trip Udine-Cividale should cost around 30 euros; a trip Airport-Cividale, or Airport-Udine, should cost around 60 euros. During the night (22:00-6:00), fares are increased by 20%.
